Broken House Window - what to do?

1. Record the Broken Window. Take photos or a video. You need to file a police report that you may need for homeowners insurance claim. However, often the deductible on the policy ($1,000) is more than the cost of repair.

Take pictures and video of where the glass used to be, where the glass ended up, and if possible, what broke the glass.

2. File the Broken Window Damage. Filing the damage means file a police report if the broken window is related to a break in or vandalism and a homeowner’s claim if the damage is above your deductible. Ask the insurance agent if it is OK to clean up the damage. They may tell you to wait for a police officer or a claims adjuster.

3. Clean Up and Secure the Broken Window. Secure the hole where the glass was. Use a board or a piece of plywood to cover the hole and screw it in to the wall.

4. Replace the Broken Window As Soon As Possible. Contact a professional to replace the broken glass. You can call Home Depot and ask for the service. Angie's List ($35 per year) and Yelp may have suggestions. If you are not happy with the work of the contractors through Home Depot, you can dispute the quality through Home Depot and you have a good chance of resolution. Lowe's apparently does not offer such mediation during disputes.
