Increasing Energy Efficiency In Your Home

- apply caulk in any cracks or gaps you see around doors and windows. These are the primary sources for wasted energy around most homes. There are three basic types of caulk: latex, silicone, and polyurethane.

- apply weather stripping around doors and windows in their openings.

- insulate the attic. It is important that your insulation meet the R-value for your region.

- for each spigot you have outside of your home, get an inexpensive cover to help keep them from freezing. The spigot cover, which is more commonly called "faucet cover" is avilable from most stores but it best priced at Menard's (Outdoor Faucet Cover at Menards http://bit.ly/1fxcbO9, $1 in 2013).

- cover the AC unit. There are many commercial covers (Shop Frost King 16-in W x 18-in H Vinyl Outside Window Air Conditioning Cover at Lowes http://low.es/1fxcxEi, $6 in 2013) but a black trash bag should do the same job, as may users report.
